Canada completed a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Australia with a walk off single. The final score was 3 to 2, and Canada is now one step closer to the podium of the 12th Women’s Softball Championship, which will end on Friday at the Independencia Stadium in La Rinconada.

The Americans led off the bottom of the seventh with singles by Kaleigh Rafter and Lill Russell, to follow with sacrifice by Victoria Hayward, putting runners in scoring position.

Mel Matthews brought Rafter home with an infield hit. And later, Caitlin Lever became Canada’s heroine bringing the last two runs which end game, with a rocket to left field. The losing pitcher was the starter Justine Smethurst.

Right from the first inning Australia was leading the score, when they opened the score with single by first in the order Brenda De Blades, sacrifice 1-3 by Leigh Godfrey and double to left field by Tracey Mosley, against Canada’s Danielle Lawrie.

The second run was scored against winning pitcher Jenna Caira in the top of the fourth with double to left field by Danielle Stewart, who reached third on sacrifice by Jodie Bowering, and later scored on a double to right field by Chelsea Forkin.

The Australian offense shot 8 hits, Brenda De Blades was 3 for 3, one run, and Danielle Stewart was 2 for 3, one run. Canada had 4, all in the seventh, no doubles.

Canada’s next game will be at 7:00 pm against China, which beat Venezuela in the first game, with a score of 6-1.
